Hello! My name is Jim Alves. I’m a graduate student at Florida State University getting a degree in Mental Health Counseling. This will be a second career for me, as I’ve been a lawyer since 1984. I’m very excited about the path ahead, and my plan is to keep this web site up and running as I transition into my new career.
I’ve created this web page originally in conjunction with a class assignment, and I hope you find it interesting and informative. I’ve included information about the types of counseling I’m interested in, as well as information concerning using technology resources in counseling. Also, I will have a few posts addressing legal issues that arise in counseling. It is my intention that counselors, students, and potential clients may find information of interest on this site.
The approach to counseling addressed in this web page is rather eclectic. Much of what I have to say about counseling is inspired by a book authored by Dr. Alphons Richert, entitled “Integrating Existential and Narrative Therapy.” (Dr. Richert died recently in 2012.) I’ve also been influenced by Albert Ellis, and I believe that a version of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy can be helpful in most counseling contexts. Finally, I’ve recently had an opportunity to learn about Internal Family Systems Therapy through an internship with Dr. Nancy Wonder in Tallahassee. You can find more information about all these things on the following pages.
